What is a Metal Roofing System and What Are the Advantages?

There are many types of metal roofing material. Certain styles commonly used consist of :

Aluminum Roofing: Long-lasting, resistant to salt water corrosion

Copper Roofing: Extremely long-lasting, very soft with low melting temperature

Steel Roofing: Three variations: galvanized, galvalume, and weathering steel (Corten)

Zinc Roofing: Extremely long-lasting, resistant to corrosion and lowest melting point

All are made to help create a durable metal roof and help combat common issues when it comes to roofing. A metal roofing panel has been around for quite some time and will continue to be a popular choice because of the many advantages they bring to your home. Here are a couple of their benefits:

  • Longevity: Metal roofing is specifically engineered to help them outlast almost any other type of roof. When buying a metal roof, people tend to plan on that being the only roof they will really ever have to invest in because of how well they are designed to fulfill their life expectancy. Just taking a look at numbers, traditional asphalt roofs have an expectancy of about 20-30 years, and metal roofs have a quoted life span of anywhere between 40-70 years.
  • Durability: When putting different roofing material into perspective such as plastic, wood, concrete, metal, or glass, or even other types of asphalt shingle, metal is clearly the one that stands out as the strongest and there is a reason for that. Metal roofing, when installed properly can brave many harsh conditions without extremely weathering. For example, metal roofs are designed to withstand:

– Hail

– Rain

– Debris (sticks, rocks)

– Mold

– Snow

– Strong winds

– Rodents and small animals

– Mildew

– Often built to be the most fire resistant compared to other roof types

  • Maintenance: When correctly installed the maintenance required to keep a metal roof up to standards is extremely minimal. Sometimes the most upkeep ever really needed is just making sure no sticks, branches or things like that get stuck or clog the gutters up there after a big storm.
  • Energy Efficient: A commonly overlooked fact about metal roofing, like an exposed fastener and a corrugated metal roof, is that because metal roofs reflect solar radiant heat, your cooling costs can be lowered by 10-25%.
  • Eco- Friendly: Metal roofing is environmentally friendly in more ways than one. With the biggest, being the fact that metal shingles are highly recyclable. If there is ever a scrap or metal roof panel that breaks off or needs to be replaced, they can always be recycled and used for future products. Another big thing about metal roofing materials such as aluminum are being used, chances are they have already been recycled and are now being used again for roofing. Also keep in mind that metal roof materials such as copper and zinc are both found in the earth. So they can naturally be sustained and replenished.
  • Low weight: Not commonly thought of, but metal roofs are the lowest weight residential roofs available. Which means as structures or homes may age, low weight roofs help guard against structural movement.
  • Adaptable: Metal roofs can be very adaptable to many different home designs. There are products for steep and low pitched roofs, and even arched or rounded roofs.

Types of Metal Roofs

There are a variety of metal roofing styles available through our partnership with Coated Metals Group. What we offer is called the Standing Seam Metal Roof Panel System. The standing seam panel consists of vertical or trapezoidal legs with a flat space in between. It is one of the most durable and weather-tight roof systems available. Featuring a concealed fastener system, ensures that the fasteners will not be exposed to elements that could cause deterioration. Also a nice thing about this design is that no nails are used, just clamps hold the panels to the roof deck, meaning there are no holes that will allow moisture to flow through. The Standing Seam Roofing Panel Systems consists of multiple styles and here is closer look at them:

  • Ultra Snap Panels: This has become the most popular among contractors and homeowners. Due to the fact that it provides an aesthetic appeal and is relatively easy to install it is not hard to see why it is a first choice. Because it is a one piece snap on design that does not require mechanical seaming, there is a measurable labor savings. These panels also feature the use of concealed expansion clips therefore allowing for thermal expansion while still providing uplift resistance. Typically recommended for applications having 3:12 pitch or greater.
  • Ultra Flange Panels: This style is ideal for residential and light duty commercial applications. Also featuring the unique one piece, clip-less, concealed fastener design helps the installation go seamlessly. Meaning it is a great economic solution and will help you save in labor expenses. This is available in both a 1″ high seam profile (1.0) and 1 1/2″ high variety (1.5). Typically recommended for applications having 3:12 pitch or greater.
  • Ultra- Span Panels: This features a mechanically seamed male/female interlock seam. It also provides a versatile combination of structural performance and water tightness. Because of the two piece clip assembly, the Ultra-Span is able to have room for thermal and structural expansion and contraction. This is an ideal system for homes or buildings with long roof spans that are low. This does come in a variety of widths.
  • Ultra- Flush Panels: The Ultra-Flush Panels are perfect for providing a clean, sleek look. Featuring a 1” deep profile, the anchoring is concealed, sustaining excellent rigidity. There is a variety of widths available.  Ultra-Flush panels are intended for use in soffit and vertical wall applications and are not to be used for roofing.
  • Ultra Seam Panels: This style carries the reputation as the industry standard in the standing seam roofing. It is able to achieve the highest air and water infiltration rating available with a double locked profile that is mechanically seamed. It gives off the traditional look yet features a highly efficient water tight system. When installing, it is recommended that a solid substrate and minimum underlayment of 30 lb of felt be underneath it.

Metal Roofing FAQ’s

How to install metal roofing?

Because metal roofing is already on the more expensive side a popular option is to just learn how to install it.
yourself to save on labor costs. Here is an overview of what it will take to install metal roofing:
1. Measure your roof
2. Remove old roofing and repair any damage
3. Install edging
4. Install metal panels or shingles
5. Install roof ventilation
6. Install flashing

How much does a metal roof cost?

Keep in mind that metal roofing is among the most expensive roofs to have, but there are definitely pros to it. That being said the average cost for the whole roof to be done can range from $10000-$30000. And the average cost for metal roofing is about $6-$12 per sq ft installed.

How long does a metal roof last?

One of the many benefits of a metal roof is its longevity. When properly installed a metal roof can be expected to last 40-70 years depending on the materials used. So yes it will be quite more expensive than other roof materials but in some cases a metal roof can outlive other roofs twice.

Can you paint a metal roof?

You can choose to paint over a metal roof you just need to make sure that you prepare the roof correctly. This involves making sure that it has been power washed before painting anything over it. And then you will want to make sure that you choose the right primers, paints and sealants, and apply your products correctly.

Can you put a metal roof over shingles?

Not recommended, but in some cases you can place a metal roof over existing shingles without having to tear anything off. However some areas and building codes may not allow that. Also keep in mind that if it is not done correctly, moisture can get trapped in between the shingles and metal roof and will build up and cause mold and rot.

How do you clean a metal roof?

When cleaning a metal roof you will want to use light pressure or a hot water pressure water.

Which is better: A metal roof or shingles?

There are a lot of pros and cons for both roof types. When you break it down, there are many color options for either type, as well as design options. Shingles tend to be easier to install than metal, but metal roofs can outlive twice a shingles lifespan sometimes. Either way you look at it both can be beneficial in different ways.

Are metal roofs loud?

At first thought it might seem like metal roofs would be loud, however they are typically installed over a solid wood roof deck which in turn absorbs a lot of the sound produced from rain, hail, etc. In some cases metal roofs can even be quieter than other roof types.

How do you find a leak in a metal roof?

There can be multiple causes for a leak in a metal roof. Here are a couple of things you can check for to determine where or what cause the leak:
-Check the roof slope: metal roofs require a minimum slope and if it is less than that, that could be the source of the leak.
-Make sure metal panels are locked/secured: if a panel gets blown out of place from a storm that can cause a leak.
-Check for punctured holes: can be caused from debris hitting it or screws being blown out of place.
-Check termination areas: these are the places where the metal roofing ends or stops. There could potentially be gaps.
